Olympic Gold Medallist Yuna Kim, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, thanks Haiti donors

NEW YORK, USA, 9 July 2010 – In a special video message marking the six-month anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Yuna Kim thanks donors who have supported a cause she herself holds dear: UNICEF"s relief efforts for Haitian children and families.

Ms. Kim is deeply committed to improving the lives of children. After the earthquake struck in Haiti, she made a generous donation to UNICEF"s emergency operations for children there.

In her video message, Ms. Kim addresses fellow donors directly.

"When the earthquake in Haiti shook the nation to the core, like you, I decided to help. And together, we did help by providing children with food, protection, clean water, medicine and school books," she says. "What has already been achieved in Haiti brings hope. But rebuilding homes, schools and lives will take time, and it needs our continued support. Let us not forget the people of Haiti – or the millions of children around the world who need our help the most."

Grace, wit and strength

Ms. Kim, 19, was born in the Republic of Korea and began skating at the age of five. She won a Gold Medal at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and is ranked number-one in the world by the International Skating Union.

Known for her grace, wit and strength on the ice, Ms. Kim became World Champion in 2009 and is a three-time Grand Prix Final champion. In 2006, she was the World Junior Champion.

"Yuna Kim has not only been winning figure-skating competitions over the past several years, she has also been winning the hearts of the global public with her commitment, humility and ability to remain calm under pressure," said UNICEF Executive Director Athony Lake. "We are confident that the appointment of Yuna Kim as a Goodwill Ambassador will help raise the profile of the Millennium Development Goals for children and will contribute to the promotion of children’s rights around the world."

Members of the Toronto, Cricket Skating & Curling Club honored the club’s shining star, Yu-Na Kim, at a celebratory bash on Wednesday afternoon.

"This is our Olympic celebration for our Olympic gold medalist, Yu-Na. Like all great stars, you are known by one name, Yu-Na - right?" master of ceremonies, Tracy Wilson said with good humor.

"On behalf of all the club members I just want to thank you for everything you have accomplished - and not just what you did in Vancouver. I know you don’t notice it because you are so busy every day with your work, but people are constantly coming through the club … and the buzz that you have created and the amount of enjoyment and pleasure that you have brought to everyone here - thank you so much and congratulations."

Spencer Buchanan spoke on behalf of the club’s skaters. "I just want to start with a quick story about my first day at this club," he said. "I came from a very small club and my coach told me I could get in anyone’s way except for one person. That was Miss Yu-Na Kim. I wondered who is Yu-Na Kim - but now we all know who Yu-Na is."

"You have been such an inspiration, you are such a great role model. It has trickled all the way down to the junior levels and I am sure every skater here agrees," Buchanan added. "Just to see what it takes to be at the top level – on behalf of all the skaters, I just want to say thank you for being so great. It has been really awesome."

Wilson noted that watching her coach Brian Orser at rink side is almost as much fun as watching Kim compete. "Coming from the television world there are no better replays than Yu-Na going into the triple-triple and then there is a little picture at the bottom of the screen of Brian going through the jumps with her," Wilson said with humor.

"Thank you so much everyone. I really love training here with all the skaters and oh, of course, the coaches," the 2010 Olympic champion said with a laugh. "They all helped me to improve and to train harder."

Kim was presented with a commemorative plaque that will be displayed at the club to honor her historic achievement in Vancouver.

LADIES

The ladies event started out with a bang, as Yu-Na Kim from South Korea set a new record for Highest score for a short programme – ladies with a score of 78.50.  Kim skated a sultry program to a medley of James Bond music, capping off her routine by pointing an imaginary smoking gun at the judges.

Kim continued her record-breaking streak in the long program, where she posted an astronomical score of 150.06, shattering her old record of 133.95 for the Highest score for a long programme – ladies.  The combination of her two record scores also produced a new record for Highest total score – ladies, with a 228.56.  Kim held the previous record in this category, with a total score of 210.03.  With her gold medal performance, Kim became the first Korean figure skater to win an Olympic medal of any color. <--
